Director of Risk Management and Insurance
Joe Fiorelli joined the Office of Risk Management and Insurance in 2017 as a Risk Management Analyst. He now serves as the Director of Risk Management and Insurance, which involves managing the University’s insurance portfolio and administering University programs such as workers compensation, minors on campus, driver safety training, and drones/UAS. Prior to picking up his Charlotte 49er pickaxe, Joe worked as an Underwriter and Product Research and Market Analyst for United Educators, a major insurance carrier for over 1,600 private schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States.
Joe lives in Charlotte with his wife, Joanna, and two children, Luca and Julia. He enjoys woodworking and hiking on weekends, along with planting a massive vegetable garden each spring.
WORKERS’ COMPENSATION MANAGER
Angela Allen is the Workers’ Compensation Manager and has been employed at UNC Charlotte since 2002. She handles the Workers’ Compensation (WC) Program, which includes WC Compensation and Leave Administration and the WC Return to Work Program. In her role, she assists employees who have been injured while performing a work-related task in handling WC claims documentation, ensuring prompt medical treatment and returning them back to work safely. This also involves working directly with various external organizations including the Third-Party Administrator (TPA) that is contracted by the State of North Carolina to process the claims and determine the liability for work-related injuries. Angela completed dual Bachelor’s of Science (BS) degrees from UNC Charlotte’s Belk College of Business Administration (Human Resources Management and Finance, Risk Management & Insurance) as well as her HR Certification Institute Professional in Human Resources (HRCI – PHR). She also obtained a Master’s of Science (MS) degree in Human Resources Management from Western Carolina University and later earned the Society of HR Management Certified Professional (SHRM – CP) certification.
RISK ANALYST
Heather Nance joined UNC Charlotte in May of 2012. Before joining the Office of Risk Management and Insurance in April of 2022 she served as the Insurance Specialist for the Charlotte 49ers. Her primary responsibility was processing all medical insurance documentation and medical billing for student athletes. Her detailed knowledge of the student health insurance plan, third party athletic insurance, and departmental and campus policies and procedures in relation to medical, dental, vision, and psychological health needs, were crucial to her success.
Heather is here to help manage the placement and renewal of multiple University insurance policies. She is also available to manage the insurance claims process from initial fact gathering to payment and resolution. Her other responsibilities include program management for the University’s Minors on Campus program and providing administrative support for the University’s Workers’ Compensation program.
